Rocky loses last game in double overtime

Rocky Mountain’s tough season ended in heartbreaking fashion Saturday night at French Field.

The Lobos lost 43-36 to Doherty in double overtime.

Rocky missed a game-winning 50-yard field goal at the end of regulation, but senior Gabe Gutierrez put the Lobos ahead in the first overtime on a 4-yard touchdown run.

The Spartans answered with a touchdown on fourth down in the first overtime, and struck from 10 yards out in the second.

Rocky had the ball on the 2-yard line, got hit two yards in the back field on the run and made it inside the 1-yard line to ultimately lose the game.

“It was a scrappy football game,” Rocky coach Mark Brook said. “We consistently ran the ball well, but made a couple mistakes that cost us.”

Justin Schiller gave Rocky its first lead of the game with a 30-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown early in the third quarter.

The Lobos trailed 14-6 at halftime, and scored 23 points in the second half to force overtime.

The 36 points scored was a season high for Rocky.

Doherty running back Zach Young rushed 22 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns in the game.

Rocky finishes with a 1-9 record while Doherty improved to 2-8.

“Seeing the senior leadership and how they handled the adversity is huge for our young guys,” Brook said. “I’d like to think that’s going to benefit us in the future.”
