Roncalli defeated in state semifinal 4-3

The Roncalli girls tennis team’s season came to a close on Saturday at the WIAA Division 2 Team State Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, as it was defeated by Edgewood 4-3.

“I knew coming in it’d be a tough matchup,” said Roncalli coach Mike Halla. “Having played a few of the girls last week at individual State we came in prepared, but we simply fell a few points short of advancing.”

In a bit of revenge, the Jets’ No. 1 doubles team of Abby Halla and Tallie Piaskowski beat Lauren Keller and Morgan Molitor, whom they had lost to last weekend in the WIAA State Individual Tennis Tournament championship match.

The Roncalli duo prevailed in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 to gain a bit of redemption.

“I’m happy Abby and Tallie could get the win,” added Halla. “(Abby Halla and Piaskowski) proved despite losing last week they were definitely on par with (Keller and Morgan).”

Also picking up a win in doubles were Roncalli’s Catherine Taddy and Sophie Pitz in the second flight, winning in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 against Marigrace Carney and Natalie Meicher.

The Jets’ lone win in singles came in the first flight, as Elizabeth Kuenzi defeated Sara Murphy for a second week in a row, this time 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4).

Kuenzi had beaten Murphy in the fifth-place bracket at individual State last week en route to a sixth-place finish.
