Roncalli headed for State as team


The Roncalli girls tennis team won Thursday’s WIAA Division 2 Kohler Sectional with 47 points, winning four individual flights to advance to the WIAA Team State Championships for the second time in school history.

The Jets will face Madison Edgewood in the first round of the team championships which will be Oct. 19-20 at the Nielsen Center at The University of Wisconsin campus. The Individual State Championships are Oct. 11-13.

Two Rivers was also represented at the sectional by Taylor Czekala and Lindsay Fish in No. 1 doubles. They won their first match against Molly Wirtz and Cassondra Simonis, of Pacelli, 7-5, 6-1. The pair then lost to Newman’s Madison Tubbs and Anna Gosz in the semifinal 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 before falling in the third-place match to Green Bay Notre Dame’s Nicole Pott and Meghan Linehan 6-0, 6-7.

Roncalli’s No. 1 doubles team of Abby Halla and Tallie Piaskowki improved to a state-best 28-0 by defeating Tory Walsh and Katie Messman of Medford 6-1, 6-0 in their first match. The duo rallied to beat Pott and Linehan 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinal before taking down Tubbs and Gosz 6-3, 6-4 in the final.

Also winning their flights were Emily Halvorsen (No. 2 singles), Chloe Kitzerow (No. 3 singles) and the No. 2 doubles team of Catherine Taddy and Sophie Pitz.

Halvorsen beat Xavier’s Bridget Flaherty 6-2, 6-2 and Kohler’s Elyse Gutschow 6-1, 6-3 while Kitzerow defeated Chloe Chapman, of Newman, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 and outlasted Notre Dame’s Megan Krzewinski 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

The No. 2 doubles flight saw Katherine Taddy and Sophie Pitz win their two matches 6-0, 6-4 over Xavier’s Megan DuBois and Alyssa Carew while facing Meg Bandenberg and Catherine Schaupp in the final and winning 6-3, 6-1.

Elizabeth Kuenzi took third in No. 1 singles, beating Fox Valley Lutheran’s Kim Zeller 6-3, 6-3 before falling to Newman’s Grace Larrain 6-4, 6-3 in her second match. In the third place match, Kuenzi took down Kohler’s Audra Hoffman 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Rounding out doubles was the No. 3 team of Hannah Kubsh and Anne Platter, who came in third, as they lost their first match to Newman’s Lauren LaPree and Madison Luetmen 6-2, 6-4. They beat Pacelli’s Jessica Hinkle and Sydney Otis 6-0, 6-0 in the third place match.

Laura Platterer continued the Jets’ streak of finishing no worse than third by rebounding to beat Xavier’s Abby Wallace 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4 third place match after falling to Newman’s Treva Etten 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.

Halla, Piaskowski, Halvorsen,Kuenzi,Taddy and Pitz are all automatically qualified for the individual state tournament with Kitzerow hoping to be added to the field with special qualifier status.
