Kylie Berko scored off an assist from Jada Foster at the 3:52 mark of the first half and it stood as the game-winner as the Franklin High School field hockey team used a staunch defensive effort to upset South Brunswick in the opening round of the NJSIAA North 2 Group IV Tournament on Thursday afternoon in Monmouth Junction.

The victory is the first in state tournament play for Franklin under coach Pat Cullen, who’s guided the club since 2001. The Warriors (7-11) were winless in 2010 and won just three games last season.

Fullback Nicole Singares provided a goal line save in the second half, and goalie Janelle Melecio, who recorded 10 saves, stopped a second-half penalty stroke in the triumph.

Franklin will visit third-seeded Montgomery in Tuesday’s sectional quarterfinals.

Liz Ruderman made seven saves for the Vikings (9-10).

North 2 Group IV

Hillsborough 4, Monroe 0: Jacki Schwankert caged a hat trick and Mckayl Novak had two assists to power ninth-seeded Hillsborough (7-12) into a quarterfinals matchup with top-seeded Bridgewater-Raritan. Ursula Zadzilko made eight saves for the Raiders.

Hunterdon Central 4, Manalapan 0: Nicole Barrett scored two goals and Kendall Nickel had one goal and two assists to lead Hunterdon Central (12-8). The Red Devils will visit fourth-seeded West Windsor-Plainsboro South in the quarterfinals.

WW-P South 6, Piscataway 0: Hannah Isaacs made 11 saves for No. 13-seeded Piscataway (3-16).

North 1 Group IV

Ridge 4, Livingston 2: Devon Brown caged two goals and Sam Brown dealt a pair of assists to power sixth-seeded Ridge in the first round of the North 1 Group IV Tournament. Ridge will play third-seeded Phillipsburg in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Kylie West made 15 saves for the Red Devils (7-11).

Westfield 2, Columbia 0: Emily Mastrocola scored one goal and added one assist, while Deanna Cohen stopped six shots to propel seventh-seeded Westfield (7-9-2) into a quarterfinals tilt with second-seeded Randolph.

Wayne Valley 1, North Hunterdon 0: Bridget Walsh made six saves for No. 12-seeded North Hunterdon (0-17-1).

Millburn 1, Watchung Hills 0: Rachel Toubin made three saves for eighth-seeded Watchung Hills (8-11).

Boys Soccer

Pingry 2, Hillsborough 1: In a preview of Saturday’s Somerset County Tournament final, senior fullback Henry-Flugstad-Clarke assisted junior halfback Matt Mangini for a goal in the seventh minute before Flugstad-Clarke would blast home a corner kick from senior fullback Christian Fechter in the second half as Pingry (14-1-2) clinched the Skyland Conference Delaware Division title. Hillsborough (13-3-2) rocketed a free kick from the 30-yard line into the upper-90 midway through the second half for its only goal.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood 5, Summit 0: Francisco Chinchilla netted a pair of goals as nine different players notched at least on point for Scotch Plains-Fanwood (16-1-2).

Bernards 1, North Plainfield 0 (OT): Braden Canavan scored off a through ball from Zach Smith 5:15 into the second overtime to power Bernards (12-3-3). Jay Caluna made six saves for North Plainfield (9-5-2).

North Hunterdon 2, Montgomery 1: Andrew Ottinger notched one goal and one assist and Bailey Avecellas added one goal to power North Hunterdon (5-9-2). Vin Marna scored a goal for Montgomery (0-17-2).

Delaware Valley 5, Immaculata 2: Mark Swintek and Chris Cella deposited goals, while Jonathan Cerchine dealt an assist for Immaculata (5-9-1). Delaware Valley improved to 7-8-2.

Belvidere 6, Manville 1: Milton Teixeira assisted Marcial Valverde’s goal, while Ariel Roriguez made four saves for Manville (8-10).

Bound Brook 4, South Hunterdon 3: Robert Fittipaldi had one goal and one assist and six other players recorded at least on point to power Bound Brook (6-9-1). Zach Mastrich netted a pair of goals, while Jonathan Wendebron stopped 10 shots for South Hunterdon (3-14).

Somerset Tech 4, East Brunswick Tech 2: Brandon Leal and Brandon Malbranche netted a pair of goals each, while Chris Geissler made six saves for Somerset Tech (10-9) which scored four second-half goals to rally from a 2-0 deficit.

Union Catholic 2, Roselle Catholic 1: Matt Cristales and Brandon Dias scored one goal each, while Michael Gonzalez made four saves for Union Catholic (6-9-2).

Westfield 3, New Providence 1: Westfield (10-3-5) received three second-half goals, two from Derek Amakye, in triumph. Jason Bradley tallied a goal and Robert Madsen made 15 saves for New Providence (2-12-3).

South Plainfield 1, Metuchen 1: Josue Cevallos assisted Taylor Born’s goal, while Kyle Dennis and Patrick Boyle combined to make seven saves for South Plainfield (6-7-7).

Somerville 3, Belleville 0: Brandon Bellina, Prince Doku and Christian Pena found the back of the net for Somerville (7-5-4).

Prep B Tournament quarterfinals

Gill St. Bernard’s 3, Golda Och 2: A 20-shot output rallied top-seeded Gill St. Bernard’s from a 2-1 haltime deficit. The Knights (14-2-1) will host fourth-seeded Oratory Prep in the semifinals on Tuesday. Jae Wong, Matt Decker and Bijan Eizadkhah scored one goal apiece for Gill.

Rutgers Prep 3, Wardlaw-Hartridge 2: Ryan Dennis deposited two goals and Antonio Arce netted another to power third-seeded Rutgers Prep (8-10) into Tuesday’s semifinals against second-seeded Newark Academy. Wardlaw-Hartridge scored a second-half goal and fell to 4-11-2.

Girls Soccer

Franklin
2, Ridge 2: Senior Taylor Packwood scored two second-half goals as Franklin (8-8-1) erased a 2-0 halftime deficit to earn the draw. Keri Villano and Nicole Bates scored first-half goals for Ridge (12-3-1).

Montgomery 4, North Hunterdon 1: Jessi Goldman posted two goals and two assists to help lead Montgomery (16-1-2). Jillian Kennedy headed in a Brynn McDonald corner kick midway through the first half for North Hunterdon (8-10).

Bernards 3, North Plainfield 0: Melanie Macchiaverna, Montana Sutton and Laura Galli scored goals as Bernards (14-4) clinched the championship of the Skyland Conference Valley Division. Kendra Egbert made 13 saves for North Plainfield (7-7-1).

Somerset Tech 6, Purnell 0: Freshman Harleen Singh netted four goals and Ariel Conner added a goal and an assist to lead Somerset Tech (13-6) to its 11th straight.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood 4, Kinnelon 0: Christy Monroy scored two goals and Taylor Sebolao made five saves to send Scotch Plains-Fanwood (14-2-1).

Bridgewater-Raritan 2, Hillsborough 0: Jessica Schwed and Rachel Truska scored goals as Bridgewater-Raritan improved to 11-5-2.

Westfield
2, Oak Knoll 0: Caroline Greenspan and Karli Sottung scored goals, while Brianna O’Brien notched an assist, and Westfield improved to 12-4-1.

New Providence 3, Union 0: Lisa Caprara, Anna Crisafi and Erin Fay each scored a goal as New Providence improved to 8-11.

Union Catholic 7, Plainfield 1: Emily Cimilucca scored twice for Union Catholic (5-11). Wendy Reyes hit for Plainfield (5-11).

Somerville
2, Mount St. Mary 1: Brooke Benner and Maxine Blackwood scored for Somerville (13-3).

Governor Livingston 2, Summit 2: Jenn French and Julia Stirpe scored goals for Governor Livingston (13-5-1).

Belvidere
6, Manville 0: Rachel Janes made 14 saves, but Manville wrapped up its season by falling to 5-10-1.

Dover
5, Bound Brook 2: Christine Mayorga tallied a goal and an assist and Kailyn Horsburgh scored a goal but Bound Brook fell to 5-13.

Prep B Tournament quarterfinals

Academy
4, Gill St. Bernard’s 0: Senior Jessie Ferrando finished with six saves for fourth-seeded Gill St. Bernard’s, but the No. 5 seed scored four second-half goals to sink the Knights (8-6-1).

Morristown
Beard 3, Rutgers Prep 0: Kendra Barat made 13 saves for seventh-seeded Rutgers Prep (2-9-1).
