The Salinas High girls basketball team avenged an earlier loss to Hollister by beating the Haybalers 38-37 on Friday night at the Alisal Winter Jam.
The Cowboys (6-2) advance to play in the championship game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against host Alisal.
Hollister got the better of its Monterey Bay League Gabilan rival Salinas 53-39 on Dec. 7 in the Watsonville Tournament. The Haybalers trailed by eight with 2:30 left in Friday’s game and nearly won. With four seconds left, Hollister’s Ellie Burley got off a half-court shot at the buzzer, but it bounced off the backboard and off the front of the rim.
Salinas was led by Daniella Villegas’ 12 points and Sam Luna’s eight.
Alisal 45, King City 36: At the Alisal Winter Jam, Natalia Castro scored 17 points for the Trojans and Brittany Valdez added 12 as the Trojans (3-3) advanced to their tourney title game. For the Mustangs, Sarah Shepherd had 14 points.
Pacific Grove 37, Harbor 33: At the Alisal Winter Jam, Mackenzie Bell scored the go-ahead basket to break the tie with a minute and a half left to help the Breakers defeat Harbor. For Pacific Grove, Jessica Matthews had a game-high 20 points. For Harbor, Shannon Postle had17.
Pacific Grove plays Aptos Saturday in the consolation championship.
Salinas 73, Soledad 35: At Salinas, the Cowboys played their first home game in 42 years without Joe Chappell as coach and didn’t skip a beat under new coach Jens Gordon.
Salinas built a 21-10 halftime lead and went on to its fifth win in six non-league games.
Josef Delk led the Cowboys with 14 points, Paul Van Schuyver had 11 and Zachery Teeter 10.
Daniel Smith paced the Condors with nine points and freshman Jordan Graves added seven.
Salinas plays in the Carmel Tourney on Thursday where it will face Seaside at 3:30 p.m.
North County opens play Thursday in the Patterson Tournament in Gault against Liberty Ranch.
Monterey 44, Alisal 37: At Monterey, the Toreadores put three players in double figures to beat the Trojans and up their record to 3-2. Alisal went to 5-2.
Chris Russo had 16 points for Monterey, Kyle Neeley 14 and freshman Carter Aldrete 10.
Robert Bledsoe was the only Trojan in double figures with 11 points.
Monterey is at Pacific Grove Saturday night at 7.
St. Francis CC 69, Gonzales 44: At Gonzales, Israel Gallegos netted 16 points and Josue Madrigal had 15 for the Spartans as they fell to 1-5.
Gonzales begins a four-game, four-night tourney Wednesday in Reno.
Watsonville 66, King City 50: At King City, the Mustangs wasted an 11-point lead in the second quarter and fell to 1-6 with the loss.
Trent Salcido led King City with 18 points while Alex Chavez scored 26 for the Wildcatz.
Alvarez 62, North Salinas 38: At North Salinas, the Vikings led 16-14 after the first quarter but Alvarez responded with a 20-3 spurt in the second quarter to take control for good.
Mitch Wood scored 20 points for the Eagles, Lanier King had 16 and Arturo Solano eight as Alvarez stayed unbeaten at 6-0.
North Salinas, 3-2, visits Stevenson on Tuesday.
San Lorenzo Valley 51, Pacific Grove 48 (OT): At SLV, the Breakers had chances to win in regulation and in overtime but couldn’t convert the key basket.
In a nip-and-tuck game, Pacific Grove led by six with three minutes remaining but the Cougars charged back to extend the game. The game was tied 25-25 at halftime.
Pacific Grove’s Jordan Borne finished with 14 points and Luke Lowell had nine. Lucas Trader led SLV with 18 points and Billy Mullins had 17.
The Breakers (0-5) are back in action Saturday at home against Monterey.
Santa Catalina 4, Anzar 0: At Santa Catalina, the Cougars led 1-0 at the half after Kimberly Villegas scored with an assist from Perry Sheldon. Daisy Villegas added a second goal in the 74th minute, Fatima Larios scored the third three minutes later.
Salinas 3, Watsonville 3: At Salinas, in a MBL opener Melissa Camacho scored in the ninth minute with an assist by Cynthia Camacho. Camacho made the second goal in the 64th minute and Emilie Costa scored the final goal for Salinas in the 70th with an assist by Valeria Tellez.
Cowboy goalie Xochitl Camacho-Lopez had four saves.
Monterey 3, Seaside 1: At Seaside, the Toredores opened up MBL Pacific play with a win over the rival Spartans.
Kaila Lockwood had two goals and an assist, Jordan Thompson had a goal and an assist and Aida Mora had an assist.
Monterey (3-2-1 overall) plays Wednesday at home against Carmel.
Alisal 2, North County 2: At North County, the Condors’ Aimee Rodriguez scored in the 77th minute on a free kick to give her team a draw in the MBL Pacific opener for both teams.
Janeth Vega scored North County’s goal in the first half off an Reyna Andalon assist.
North County (2-2-2 overall) resumes play Jan. 7 at home against Pajaro Valley.
Palma 3, Live Oak 1: At Palma, the Chieftains led at the half following Zack Werner’s goal that deflected off a Live Oak defender and Edgard Cardenas got the next goal off a throw-in by J.R. Budde.
The Chieftains (4-2-0 overall and 1-0 league) host Stevenson at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
