The Skyland Conference has accepted Rutgers Prep for all sports starting in the 2014-15 school year.
“They will blend in very well,” Skyland commissioner Carl Weigner said. “They have a lot of sports and some very, very good teams. They’re in Somerset County so it makes sense.”
The Argonauts, who gained NJSIAA recognition this past summer, have to wait two years because the Skyland is just commencing a two-year schedule cycle. They will remain independent until then. Weigner said the vote was a solid majority but not unanimous.
The Skyland, which encompasses Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties, aligns its divisions on a sport-specific basis to accommodate individual program strength. The Argonauts are particularly strong in boys and girls basketball.
“We’re thrilled to death,” Rutgers Prep athletic director Mary Klinger said. “The way they do the divisions is perfect. It’s great because we know the Somerset County schools already and we’re looking forward to building relationships with the other ones.”
