Saguaro rolls in title rematch vs. Cactus

Last year’s Division III championship game between Glendale Cactus and Scottsdale Saguaro came down to the final possession.

Friday night’s rematch wasn’t even close.

Saguaro scored on the third play of the game and thoroughly dominated visiting Cactus 67-14.

“This was a statement for us,” Saguaro coach Jason Mohns said.

“This was a statement to everyone else in DivisionIII that the Saguaro that played in the first two weeks is not the Saguaro that we are.”

For all the highlights on both sides of the ball, the game was won in the trenches. Saguaro’s offensive line opened huge holes while its defense collapsed the pocket and shed would-be blockers with ease.

“The guys up front came to play tonight,” senior running back Gena Adams said. “They set the tone for us.”

No.6 Saguaro (4-1) took control of the game early and had a 27-0 lead before third-ranked Cactus (3-2) recorded a first down.

Junior quarterback Luke Rubenzer scored on a 34-yard run on the opening possession after running for 37 yards on the previous play.

Rubenzer also tossed a pair of scores and caught a touchdown pass from sophomore wide receiver Christian Kirk — all in the first half. He rushed for more than 100 yards in the first quarter alone.

Adams and fellow senior running back Kash Robinson caught Rubenzer’s touchdown passes.

Robinson finished the game with nearly 150 yards and four touchdowns rushing; Adams had two rushing touchdowns.

The Saguaro defense forced two turnovers. The first came on an interception by senior defensive back Will Sharif, which led to Adams’ second rushing touchdown.

“We’re finally healthy,” Mohns said. “The team that showed up tonight is the Saguaro team we knew we had this summer.”
