Sherwood Advances In The Playoffs

Story by Malcolm Johnson

OLNEY, Md. (WUSA) — On a night where playoff football began all across the region, the Sherwood Warriors made sure they put their best foot forward in the first round. At home against a 7-3 Catonsville team, the Warriors looked strong on both sides of the ball. They were most impressive in two areas that are keys in playoff football: running the ball and high pressure defense. The Warriors did not allow the Comets to complete a single pass through four quarters of play.

In a 26-7 victory, the Comets lone score came on the ground from captain and future Maryland Terrapin, DeAndre Lane with 26 seconds left in the first half.

The Warriors proved to be very versatile on offense, utilizing a strong ground game that opened up the pass as well as play action. “We wanted to mix it up. Run to get our play action going a little bit. Took a few shots deep here and there. We were moving the ball successfully, so we stuck with it,” said head coach Mike Bonavia.

Quarterback Jordan Larsen went 4-8 passing, throwing for 104 yards, one touchdown, and one costly interception that resulted in the Comets only scoring possession of the night. That scoring drive by the Comets brought the game to it’s closest point, 13-7 at the half.

The second half game plan was very clear: run the ball. The man that would carry the load ? Moses Vines. Vines went into halftime with 20 yards and one touchdown. The young man who transferred from DeMatha high school would finish with 111 yards, and three touchdowns. “Moses is our workhorse right now. He carries the load for the team. Kids look up to him, and he’s a great leader. He’s a hungry humble guy,” said coach Bonavia.

“I just knew I had to keep running the ball hard, and pounding until something opened up. Every game they put 7-8 players in the box but we spread things out and holes start to open up,” said Vines. Next week the Warriors will travel to play an undefeated Westminster team who beat Blake, 52-7.
