Shore Football Roundup: Point Beach routs Spotswood to remain unbeaten

Point Beach continued its undefeated run with a 44-16 thumping of the Spotswood Tigers (1-2).

A majority of the Garnet Gulls’ (3-0) damage was done on the ground in the form of 360 total rushing yards with a workload dispersed between a three-pronged running back attack that featured Danny Tighe, who carried 13 times for 188 yards and two touchdowns (three total as he took a second-half punt return into the end zone), as well as Andre Cochrane (18-for-109), and Kyle Samaritano (5-for-53).

Not to be overlooked is Jake Fioretti’s passing attack. The sophomore went 7-for-9 eclipsing the century mark with 116 passing yards and a touchdown toss to Bobby Parlow. Fioretti also capped off the Garnet Gulls’ second scoring drive with a first-quarter touchdown scramble.

Aside from drilling a 22-yard first-half field goal, Zack Yates made an impact on the defensive side of the ball recording an interception, as Quinn Kusma led Point Beach with eight solo tackles and a couple of sacks, while Lucas Gordy dragged down five opposing ball carriers including the Tigers quarterback for a sack of his own.

POINT BORO 20, CENTRAL 14: The Panthers are 3-0 for the first time since 2007 according to head coach Sean Henry, after scoring two of their three touchdowns on defense in a Class B South victory over the Golden Eagles (1-2, 0-2).

Senior quarterback Chris Oliphant scored the only offensive touchdown (rushing) while junior defensive lineman Nick Dzuna got the sack and senior linebacker Kevin Kelly picked up the fumble and returned it for a score. Senior linebacker Kurt VanBenschoten added a strip and fumble return for the Panthers’ (3-0, 2-0) final touchdown.

DUNELLEN 32, MATER DEI 6: Mater Dei’s Christian Palmer scored on a 7-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, but the Seraphs (0-3) fell to the Destroyers (2-1) in a nonconference game.

After Palmer scored the touchdown, the Seraphs went for a two-point conversion pass and it was incomplete. That touchdown run was set up by a Matt Eckert strip and fumble recovery to the 7-yard line.

Dunellen carried the ball 43 times for 356 yards as Dylan Hoski lead the way with 13 carries for 123 yards with one touchdown, while Deon Brown carried seven times for 71 yards with two touchdowns.

MONSIGNOR DONOVAN 24, BARNEGAT 21: Quarterback Vinny Grasso rushed for 125 yards and scored two touchdowns leading the Griffins over the Bengals in a Class B South game on Friday night.

After an opening touchdown from the Bengals, the Griffins scored 21 unanswered points. Running back Grant Klimek rushed for 115 yards and scored a touchdown for the Girffins. Klimek also kicked a 30-yard field goal that proved to be the difference in the game.

The Bengals got the ball back on their own 2-yard line with 30 seconds left, but were unable to get into field goal range.

Barnegat junior quarterback Ricky Gerena threw touchdown passes to three different receivers as junior Ryan Ulrich had a 25-yard catch, senior Pat Moran had a 5-yard catch and Matt Knierim had a 23-yard catch.

LAKEWOOD 49, PINELANDS 14: Sophomore Chapelle Cook scored three touchdowns and senior Marquis Oliver scored two touchdowns as the Piners (2-1, 1-1) defeated the Wildcats (0-3, 0-2) in a Class B South game.

Cook had scoring runs of 70, 30 and 7 yards while Oliver had a 30-yard interception return and a 30-yard pass from senior Tyrice Beverette. Beverette also had a 1-yard run and he also threw a 50-yard pass to junior Mike Randolph.
