Sipsey Valley’s Garret Lewis and Piedmont’s Marquez Gamble were the state high school football players of the week.
Lewis threw for 340 yards, ran for 203 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:40 remaining in the Bears’ 54-47 win over Curry.
Gamble made 10 tackles, had two sacks and recovered a fumble that led to the only touchdown in the Bulldogs’ 7-0 win over Leeds. Piedmont is ranked No. 1 and Leeds No. 2 in Class 3A.
Calhoun’s Jamine Jordan, Macon-East’s Kyle White, G.W. Carver’s Jeremy Johnson, Tallassee’s Herman McKenzie and Edgewood’s Dylan Ingram, Rod Boykin and Bailey Hansen were among those considered. They were not finalists.
The awards are named by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.
