Slow start costs Pleasant volleyball team in season opener with Bishop Ready

MARION – Pleasant wasn’t ready for Bishop Ready on Saturday, and that cost the Lady Spartans in their 2012 volleyball opener.

The Columbus-based Ready team won the first two games of the non-conference match and then had to hold off a rallying Pleasant team for a 25-17, 29-27, 16-25, 25-20 victory.

Pleasant coach Kim Atherton said the first game unfortunately set the tone for a lot of the Lady Spartans’ play on the day.

“We did not serve receive well,” Atherton said. “We had one attack in that first game. We’ve got to get better at serve receive.

“We’re young, and we had a little of the deer-in-the-headlights look at the beginning. After that, we competed, but we’ve got to be more disciplined.”

Mistakes helped doom Pleasant in that first game when the Lady Spartans fell behind 4-0. Slow reactions to volleys at times didn’t help, either.

Down 21-9, Pleasant did scratch back to within seven points of the Silver Knights as an ace served by Kari Verity got them started and a kill by Kayla Briley made the score 24-17, Ready. But that’s as close as the hostesses got.

Pleasant was also down by seven points late in game two before a more aggressive style sent that contest into extra time. The Lady Spartans had a couple of chances to prevail in that one before Ready came on out on top by two points.

A tip from Cassie Hosp, a kill by Hunter Atherton and an ace launched by Hosp gave Pleasant a 9-7 advantage in game three, an edge the Lady Spartans would not give up.

Pleasant once again trailed 4-0 in the fourth game yet rebounded to lead 19-17. But from there on out, the Lady Silver Knights held an 8-1 scoring edge to wrap up the match.

Brittany Davis served 16 of 16 and had 21 digs in the match for Pleasant; Briley served 14 of 14, set 51 of 53 with 21 assists, and smacked nine kills; Verity and Kendell Queen both served 12 of 13; Autumn Snider added 11 kills and three blocks; and Hunter Atherton set 62 of 65 with 20 assists and she produced 17 kills and 20 digs.

The varsity victory allowed Ready to make a clean sweep of the three matches in the Stan Kirby Gymnasium. Ready was a 25-13, 25-20 JV winner and also took a 25-16, 25-11 triumph in the freshman matchup.

Kamryn Kimmel led Pleasant in kills in the JV match with four while Kaitlyn Massy had 13 assists and Zoe Blough notched nine digs. In the freshman match, Miranda Hosp set 24 of 25 for Pleasant and Hannah Howell was the kill leader with five.
