Soccer roundup: Jones' goal pushes Cathedral past St. John's Prep

COLLEGEVILLE – St. Cloud Cathedral’s Courtney Jones scored the game-winning goal 23 minutes into the second half to give the Crusaders a 4-3 win over St. John’s Prep Thursday afternoon in a matchup of two of the area’s top girls soccer teams.

Ellie Engel had two goals for the Johnnies and Cia Strong had the other. The game was tied at 3 at the half. Clare Culligan had two goals for the Johnnies and Taylor Nydeen had the other. Cathedral goalie Mo Schroeder had seven saves. Leah Schellinger had nine saves for the Johnnies (6-4 GRC, 10-6 overall).

BRAINERD 3,
SAUK RAPIDS 0

SAUK RAPIDS – Brainerd took a two-goal lead into halftime and the Warriors went on to blank Sauk Rapids.

Madeline Hastings, Jenny Hendrickson and Emily Beltran scored for Brainerd.

Ashley Benoit had nine saves for the Storm (6-4-2, 8-4-2) and each team took 11 shots.

LITTLE FALLS 0, BECKER 0

BECKER – The Flyers mustered eight shots on goal, but came up empty as the Granite Ridge Conference game ended in a tie.

Scotti Jo Meyer stopped three shots in net for the Flyers (3-9-2).

ST. CLOUD TECH 3,
FERGUS FALLS 1

The Tigers (2-10-3) won their second game of the season after breaking a 1-all halftime score at Husky Stadium.

Abby Pierskalla, MacKenzie Feeny and Brittany Frost each had a goal for the Tigers. Milee Peavy had four saves for Tech.

ST. CLOUD APOLLO 2,
WILLMAR 1

Freshman Mikaela Soltis scored a goal for the Eagles (7-4-3) to boost them to a Central Lakes Conference win at Michie Field. Kate Warren had Apollo’s other goal.

SARTELL 4, ALEXANDRIA 1

SARTELL – The Sabres overcame an early 1-0 deficit to get two goals from Sophia VanSurksum and one each from Lauren Williams and Amber Delcastillo to beat Alexandria.

Erin Deters had four saves for Sartell (8-3-2 CLC, 11-3-2 overall). Sara Bruzek made six saves for Alexandria (7-3-1, 8-5-1).

ST. CLOUD CATHEDRAL 4,
ST. JOHN’S PREP 1

COLLEGEVILLE – The Crusaders came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to earn the Granite Ridge Conference win.

Austin Mareck and Hayden Speaks scored both goals for the Crusaders. Speaks’ goal in the 53rd minute was the game-winner. Mareck also had two assists for the Crusaders while Speaks had one.

Connor Stark-Haws had the lone goal for the Johnnies (10-6). Cathedral (13-0-2) goalie Alan Flores had seven saves. St. John’s Prep goalie Caz Novak had 10 saves.

LITTLE FALLS 4, BECKER 0

LITTLE FALLS – The Flyers stomped the Bulldogs behind Tim Infinger’s goal and three assists. Jake Loukinen also had a goal and an assist for Little Falls (3-9-2). Gabe Ploof made four saves to earn the shutout.

ST. CLOUD TECH 3,
FERGUS FALLS 0

FERGUS FALLS – Mohamud Aden, Kaleb Woodman and Andy Foley each scored a goal as Tech improved to 11-0-1 overall with a win on a snowy field in Fergus Falls.

Andrew Eisenreich had seven saves for Tech and David Scharenbroich had two saves.

SARTELL 2, ALEXANDRIA 0

ALEXANDRIA – Kellen Cameron and Carl Minnerath each scored goals as Sartell stifled Alexandria.

Cameron scored the game’s opening goal and Minnerath capped the scoring with another Sartell goal in the second half.

Freshman goalie Collin Johnson finished with three saves for the Sabres (8-2-1, 10-5-1).

WILLMAR 3,
ST. CLOUD APOLLO 2

WILLMAR – The Eagles got goals from Said Gure and Hamse Abdule, but fell in the CLC game. Cooper Gray had 10 saves for Apollo.

ST. CLOUD AREA THUNDER 10,
COLUMBIA HEIGHTS 4

COLUMBIA HEIGHTS – Doug Smith and Mikey Slonski combined for nine goals and four assists as the St. Cloud Area Thunder stormed past Columbia Heights.

Smith finished with four goals and two assists while Slonski added five goals and two more assists. Zach Michels added another score and Brianna Court added three assists for the Thunder (2-0).

Goalie Kyle Kuchenmeister finished with 22 saves for St. Cloud.

Men’s soccer

St. John’s 2, Linfield 0

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Michael Coborn and Zane Heinselman each had a goal to lead the Johnnies (5-4-2) to the win on the west coast.

Ryan Brutger had three saves for St. John’s. St. John’s outshot Linfield 14-12.
