Cathlin Bingham still remembers the sting of Ankeny’s loss to Des Moines East in last year’s Class 4-A championship game at the state softball tournament. She didn’t want to experience another loss to the Scarlets.
Bingham went 4-for-4 and knocked in the go-ahead run to lead No. 3 Ankeny to a 4-1 victory at No. 1 East in a CIML nonconference game on Tuesday.
“We definitely remember that (loss), and that’s why we came out strong today,” said Bingham.
East held a 1-0 lead before Ankeny tied the score in the fifth inning on a double by Ashlie Chambers, who had two of the Hawkettes’ 10 hits. Bingham then doubled with two outs in the sixth to drive in Olivia Parker.
Erica Kirgan provided some insurance with a two-run homer to left field in the seventh inning.
“I was really mad because I haven’t really gotten a hit for the past couple of games,” said Kirgan, who struck out with the bases loaded in the third. “I was just gripping my bat really hard and I was going to swing as hard as I could.”
Ankeny (22-2) extended its winning streak to nine games. Iowa recruit Shayla Starkenburg (18-0) tossed a five-hitter.
East opened the season with a 19-game winning streak but has lost three in a row. Jamie Reynolds had three hits for the Scarlets, who dropped both ends of a doubleheader at No. 8 Ottumwa on Monday.
East used its No. 3 pitcher, April Brown, because of injuries to Riley Fisher and Janie Smith. Both Fisher and Ankeny first baseman Aly Cappaert will play for Iowa State next year.
“It’s always good when you get to face a D-I pitcher, so I hope we see them at state,” Cappaert said.
