Softball: Class 4-A powers take cover as storm washes out game

DALLAS CENTER, Ia.

A thunderstorm caused the suspension of Wednesday’s softball showdown between Carlisle and Dallas Center-Grimes.

The Raccoon River Conference game, a rematch of last year’s Class 3-A state tournament third-place contest, was stopped at 8:10 p.m. when a storm dumped rain on the field. It was suspended 29 minutes later by umpires.

Play will resume in the top of the third inning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dallas Center. The game is scoreless.

Dallas Center-Grimes players began leaving the field when a sandstorm-like blast of wind sent up a huge dust cloud. Players broke into a sprint, some screaming.

“It was like everyone disappeared,” Dallas Center-Grimes coach Steve Schlafke said.

Carlisle is 21-3 and ranked No. 6 in Class 4-A. Dallas Center-Grimes (20-4) is ranked No. 2 in 4-A.

A baseball game between the two schools also was suspended.
