Softball regional play starts Saturday

By

Regular season play came to an end last week for Class 5A softball teams and three of the four local high schools are heading off to their respective regional tournaments Saturday morning.

Regionals are the final step before the state tournament and in order to proceed, schools must finish first or second in each tournament’s four-team bracket, all of which are double-elimination.

Fossil Ridge, Fort Collins and Poudre are all heading to separate regional tournaments. The SaberCats (17-2) are the only local team hosting. Seventh-seeded Fossil Ridge hosts the Region VII tournament at Triple Crown Sports Complex and plays its first game at 10 a.m. against No. 26 seed Chaparral. Pomona and Douglas County also are in the regional.

No. 25 Poudre (8-10) will head to host No. 8 Mountain Vista (13-6) in Highlands Ranch to play the Golden Eagles 10 a.m. No. 21-seed Fort Collins (12-7) will play No. 12 Eaglecrest (16-3) at Arvada West at 10 a.m.

Rocky Mountain failed to advance.

In Class 4A, No. 14 seed Windsor (10-8) travels to Region V host Niwot and will play No. 19 D’Evelyn (9-10) at 10 a.m. Saturday. The tournament follows the same format as 5A.
