Spartan Invitational adds races

By

The Michigan State football team added a little bronze to its uniforms last fall — and a lot to the ones it used for the University of Michigan game.

Now the MSU cross country program is adding bronze as well — bronze division races for Division 2 and 3 high schools in the Spartan Invitational on Friday at MSU’s Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing.

The bronze has been added to the white division for smaller schools (Div. 3 and 4), green division for larger schools (Div. 1 and 2) and elite division for top programs regardless of school size.

“The meet was getting so big,” meet director Andy Marsh said. “We felt adding a couple of varsity races would leave room for additional schools. We’re especially attempting to draw smaller schools, because we would like to make this meet even (in number of schools from each MHSAA division) across the board.”

Interest and participation has increased in recent years.

“We now have 25 percent of the Lower Peninsula MHSAA schools competing in this meet,” Marsh said.

The day begins with college races at noon. Michigan, Northwestern and Ohio State are coming in part to get a chance to compete where the Big Ten meet will take place on Oct. 28.
