Oshkosh North definitely put a scare into top-seeded and unbeaten Green Bay Southwest on Saturday night.
The Spartans just fell short of pulling off the upset.
North held the Spartans to just two touchdowns but came up short in a 14-7 loss in a WIAA Division 2 Level 1 playoff game.
“They did everything I asked them to. They fought. They never surrendered,” North coach Chris Kujawa told the Green Bay Press-Gazette. “We had a couple of big busts. We had that one bust on the opening play of the second half, but other than that I couldn’t be prouder of these kids.”
The opening play of the second half gave the Trojans the winning margin as Jake Gorzek broke free for a 33-yard run that put Southwest ahead 14-0.
Oshkosh North, however, answered later in the period after an interception.
Nate Neveau found Cooper Radtke for a 7-yard touchdown pass that brought the Spartans to within seven entering the final quarter.
North, though, wouldn’t threaten over the final 12 minutes as Southwest, which was ranked seventh in the last state poll, emerged with the win.
Neveau finished with 66 yards rushing on 16 carries and went 18-of-42 for 141 yards with two interceptions.
“There were a couple down years. We got a lot of young kids, and we’re going to be returning most of these guys for next year,” Kujawa said. “They’re still learning how to win. It was a good, hard-fought game.”
Gorzek finished with 82 yards on the ground to lead Southwest and had both Trojan touchdowns. He scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter.
