WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Stevens Point Area Senior High gymnastics team got its season off to a rousing success Saturday.

Led by Heidi Zorn who captured the all-around championship with a total of 33.725, the Panthers claim the team championship at the seven-team Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln Classic Invitational with 130.4 points, edging runner-up West Bend West by four-tenths of a point.

Zorn also won floor exercise (8.95) and added a second-place finish on beam (8.775) behind teammate Paige Kurszewski who won the event with a score of 8.90.

SPASH’s Libby Pieczynski picked up a third-place result on floor exercise with a score of 8.45.

The host Raiders placed seventh with a 106.55 total. Loren Abbrederis turned in the top individual result for Rapids, finishing third on balance beam with a score of 8.65.

Black River Falls Invitational

Three freshman led the way for Almond-Bancroft, as Trenton McManus (106) and Cole Clark (113) both won individual titles and Rylan Burrows took third place at 170 pounds, as the Eagles took fifth place at the Black River Falls Invitational.

“We had three freshman place in the top-three at 170, 106 and 113,” A-B coach William Wagner said. “The team took championships and the team wrestled well. We are inexperienced, but the first weekend of December is always a learning experience.”

Nekoosa/Port Edwards won the invitational and had plenty of winners. Sam Tuttle (120), Jamie Sarver (132), Ben Ayres (138), Jimmy Masonick (160), Dylan Bauer (195) all took home titles.


CAMPBELLSPORT – Mitch Hertel (145), as Marshfield took third place. Marshfield finished just one point behind second place Sauk Prairie and Beaver Dam won the meet.

The Tigers got four second place finishes from Luke Mahoney at 132 pounds, Brandon Baltus at 160, as well as Mitch Zillman (195) and Brad Schroeder (220).

Kaukauna multi-duals

KAUKAUNA – Stevens Point Area Senior High went 4-1 on the day, losing only to perennial state powerhouse Kaukauna.

Freshman Fritz Schierl captured an individual title at 126 pounds and seven other Panthers went 4-1 on the way to defeating Ashwaubenon, Hamilton, Franklin and Valders.

“Really happy with the performance,” Panthers coach Duane Groshek said. “It was our first compeitition of the year. It was just a real strong performance for us and for a freshman to go 5-0 was good to see. I am very pleased with our showing.”

Kettle Morraine Laser Duals

KETTLE MORRAINE – Patrick Spray, Matrix Jisko, Peyton Einerson and Beau Thompson all took home individual titles and led Wisconsin Rapids to a team title victory.

Rapids beat Mukwonago 38-20 in the finals.

“We are really a young team in age and experience,” Rapids coach Scott Benitz said. “I didn’t have any idea how we would do. We wound up in some tough duals and found a way to win. I am really proud of this group of kids today.”

Pacelli 8, Merrill 0

STEVENS POINT – Teagan Vezina and Luke Yenter each scored a pair of goals, and goalie Joe Fuller added 17 saves as the Cardinals blanked the Bluejays.

Matthew Mitch and Donny Sell each added a goal and an assist, while Carson Kedrowski picked up two assists for Pacelli.

“Overall, it was a good performance. It was nice to get back on the winning track,” said Cardinals coach Rusty Mitch after halting a two-game skid. “In second period we picked up the pace and played our own game, while trying to make ourselves better for the next game.”

Stephen Simon turned in a strong performance in net for the Bluejays with 33 saves.
