The Evangelical Christian School Sentinels wanted to give their coach one final victory as 12-year head coach Brian Lynch directed his team for the last time at St. John Neumann.
The Sentinels couldn’t recover from a key injury to quarterback Caleb Chapman and ended up losing Lynch’s final game 47-14.
Everything was looking bright for the Sentinels as Chapman accumulated 133 yards passing in just over one quarter of play.
Trailing 7-0 in the first quarter, Chapman capped a nine-play, 64-yard drive an 11-yard pass to Riley Escalle from 11 yards out. Despite two penalties by the Sentinels on their next drive, Chapman led his team to another touchdown.
The junior, who missed six games with a collarbone injury in the beginning of the season, hurt himself as he scored that touchdown with 8:45 left in the second quarter.
“He is one of the best prospects I have seen at this level in both size and ability… Our offense doesn’t work without him,” Lynch said of chapman.
After that the Celtics took control, scoring on a halfback pass by Kendrick Mouton to John Augustin for a 20-14 halftime lead. The Celtics scored to open the third quarter as Tylor Dimond found Solomon Obidiegwu for a 43-yard touchdown pass with 9:03 left. The Celtics used their ground game to just add two more scores in the quarter by Ryan O’Rourke and Kendrick Mouton. Mouton scored three different ways, also returning a Chapman interception for a touchdown, and finished with 13 carries for 92 yards.
Chris Cesear led the Sentinels with 24 carries for 124 yards.
Lynch spoke to both teams after the game.
“What my career has changed into was I quit being a coach that was focused on wins and losses and focused on the character of the young men that I worked with. These virtues that I have focused on can hopefully stick with these men as they go into the next phase of their life.”
