St. Philip wins girls' basketball opener

The St. Philip girls’ basketball team got off on the right foot on Friday, winning their season opener and the debut of head coach Dic Doumanian.

The Tigers held off Jackson Christian by a score of 55-50.

St. Philip was led by Kelsey Vonk with 11 points. Emily Freybler had eight points, four assists and four steals and Rachel Gallagher had seven points and seven rebounds.

(At) Colon 44, Litchfield 43: Colon’s Shaunta Adams scored 17 points, including what held up to be the game-winning basket with a minute left to play.

Also for the Magi (1-0), Skyler Harvey had 17 points and four rebounds while Makayla Craun pulled down a career-high 22 rebounds. Taya Bower had six points and Anessa Broker added four points.

(At) Kalamazoo Central 67, Battle Creek Central 55: Kayla Freeman finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds in the season-opening loss for Battle Creek Central.

Also for the Bearcats, Kaylee Ryan had 19 points.

Climax-Scotts 45, (at) North Adams-Jerome 23: Climax-Scotts’ Destiny Froberg finished with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in the season-opening victory.

Also for the Panthers, Stephanie Cochran had 10 points, including three 3-pointers and two steals, while Fallon Froberg had six points, 12 rebounds, two assists and two steals.

St. Joseph 48, (at) Marshall 44: Layla Harkey led Marshall with 10 points in the loss.

Also for the Redhawks (1-1) Tierra Orban had nine points, three assists and three steals while Logan Keissling had eight points and eight rebounds.

Olivet 48, (at) Delton Kellogg 26: Aleena Janousek finished with a game-high 14 points in the win for Olivet (1-1).

Delton Kellogg’s Kristen Mohn and Mallory Sewell had eight points apiece, while Brooke Martin finished with eight rebounds for the Panthers (1-1).

(At) Gull Lake 50, Mattawan 37: Gull Lake trailed by seven at halftime before rallying for the comeback win.

Morgan Nusbaum led the Blue Devils (2-0) with 11 points and four steals. Hadlee Hoeksema had 10 points and three steals and Jori Fell had eight points and seven rebounds.

Mattawan’s Allie Havers, a 6-foot-5 forward committed to Nebraska, finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in the loss.

Bronson 42, (at) Union City 27: Union City was led by Brooke Johnson with seven points and 14 rebounds. Marissa Mead had seven points, four rebounds and two steals. Bronson’s Elizabeth Baker had 12 points.

Pennfield 50, (AT) Constantine 20: Pennfield had a big second half, scoring 33 points after intermission, and ran away with this KVA win. Shelby Miller scored 18 points and five rebounds with Armani Anderson scoring 10 points and 13 rebounds with Hannah Lenz adding seven points and four rebounds.

. Christian 34: Holly DeLeon had 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals for Galesburg-Augusta (1-1) with Noel Mejeur adding 11 points in a KVA win over Kalamazoo Christian (0-1).

Athens 54, (AT) Centreville
19: Chantel Davenport had 17 points and five rebounds with Allison Fuller getting 12 points and Alysha Beal adding 11 points .

Pittsford 51, (at) Tekonsha 26: Tekonsha’s Katie Jenkins scored a team-high 10 points in the loss.
