State baseball: Fort Dodge-Dowling game postponed to 10 a.m. Thursday

Dowling Catholic’s quest for a second straight state baseball championship was put on hold by swirling winds, rain and lightning.
Play was halted before the second inning could begin during the Class4-A quarterfinal game between No.6 Dowling Catholic and No.4 Fort Dodge.
The game will resume at 10 a.m. today, with the Maroons (32-10) batting in the top of the second inning and trailing Fort Dodge 1-0.
“You just have to deal with it,” Dowling Catholic coach Tim O’Neill said.
Players retreated to the clubhouses at Principal Park and fans were moved to the concourses as heavy rain fell at Principal Park.
Lightning flashed through the darkness and dirt blew up on the infield as members of the grounds crew put on the tarp.
With lightning appearing well into the delay, Iowa High School Athletic Association assistant director Todd Tharp said play would not have been able to resume until late into the night.
“It’s not good to have kids out here,” Tharp said.
Fort Dodge (34-7) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Will Gormally scored on an RBI single by Tommy Halligan.
Gormally tossed one scoreless inning for the Dodgers and was set to take the mound before the delay. Fort Dodge coach Matt Elsbecker said he wasn’t sure if Gormally would throw again today.
O’Neill said he hadn’t decided if his starter, Jake Reinhardt, would pitch today.
Gormally entered the tournament with a 6-3 record and a 2.72 ERA for the Dodgers. Reinhardt is 4-2 with a 1.29 ERA.
“We’ve got a great group of seniors,” Elsbecker said. “They’re going to make sure these guys are ready to go.”
O’Neill said he wasn’t concerned with the delay hurting his team. The Maroons played in a 10a.m. game earlier in the season.
“I guess we have a little bit of experience,” O’Neill said.
“You just try to keep the kids loose. Our kids are loose. There’s just not a lot you can do.”
Elsbecker said his team had already planned on staying in Des Moines regardless of the outcome of Wednesday’s game.
