State baseball tournament: Davis County wins quarterfinal

By

Two sixth-inning errors sent defending champion Davis County of Bloomfield into the Class 2-A semifinals of the state baseball tournament.
The Mustangs improved to 42-1 with a 1-0 escape against Alta-Aurelia, despite the pitching of Austin Delp, who allowed just two hits.
“It’s definitely frustrating,” Delp said. “You know you have to play your best game.”
Calvin Mathews threw a two-hitter for Davis County, improving to 13-0 with 10 strikeouts and zero walks.
“Our bats weren’t working the best today,” Mathews said. “I just knew as a pitcher I had to go out there and keep the score low.”
Clint Foster reached safely in the bottom of the sixth inning when Alta-Aurelia’s first baseman bobbled a throw. He stole second and raced home when Calvin Utt hit a hard grounder that went between the third baseman’s legs.
Foster eluded the reach of catcher Alex Stephan as he dove for the plate.
“At the beginning, I thought it was going to be a really close play,” Foster said. “I was just thinking of any possible way to get around the tag.”
Alta-Aurelia (23-11) got the potential tying run on base when Jalen Henningsen led off the seventh inning with a single.
But he was caught trying to steal second.
“I’m kicking myself right now for doing it,” Warriors coach Dan Wendel said. “I wish I would have just bunted him over and played the safe route.”
