State baseball: Western Dubuque blasts Harlan 12-1

Western Dubuque of Epworth’s power at the plate speaks volumes. The team’s dugout shouts echo, too.
The players smashed 14 hits in Tuesday’s 12-1 win over Harlan in a Class 3-A state tournament quarterfinal at Principal Park.
They’re loud — and get teased for chanting and cheering from the dugout like a noisy softball squad.
“People are telling us, ‘It’s not a softball game,’ ” pitcher Nick Tuttle said, “but we just say, ‘Look at the scoreboard.’ ”
A strong case was the opening inning: Seven runs, eight hits and 12 batters sent to the plate.
No. 8 Western Dubuque (35-9) advanced to a semifinal by scoring in double digits for the 22nd time this season.
Seventh-ranked Harlan ended the season at 27-8.
Western Dubuque had nine batters with at least one hit. Logan Pitz, Tuttle, Lehmann, Tyson Massey and Hunter Westhoff all had two.
In the first inning, the team had eight singles. Westhoff drove in two runs with one.
Harlan starting pitcher Josh Bruck was tagged for five hits and six runs in two thirds of an inning.
“They found everywhere on the field that there was a hole,” Bruck said. “I just wanted them to hit it at someone so we could get an out.”
Western Dubuque entered the state tournament with a batting average of .356, which ranks fourth best in all of Class 3-A.
The players hit well in practice, too.
“When one person is hitting in batting practice, it jump starts everyone else,” Lehmann said.
Western Dubuque added two runs in the second , another in the third and two more in the fourth.
Kramer and Massey both hit doubles in the game. The other 12 hits were singles.
Harlan scored its only run in the first inning.
Ben Bruck walked, stole second and took third on a throwing error. Zach Osborn drove in the run with a single.
Western Dubuque will play in a state semifinal at noon on Friday. More shouting awaits.
“We have a lot of fun, we’re always hollering,” Tuttle said. “It’s a sport that’s supposed to be fun.”
