State boys' golf: Cedar Rapids Kennedy leads after first day

KENNEDY LEADS: Cedar Rapids Kennedy is ahead of Waukee by one stroke after Friday’s opening round of the Class 4-A state boys’ golf meet at Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.

Kennedy, the fourth place team in 2011, shot a 307 to lead 2011 runner-up Waukee. Johnston is another shot back at 309. Ottumwa is fourth with a 312 score and Ankeny is fifth with a 315 total. Valley, the reigning state champion, is tied for sixth at 217.

Johnston senior Grant Smith and Ottumwa sophomore Matthew Walker each shot a 69 to lead all individuals. Smith tied for the lowest score (68) at the district meet.

Ankeny junior Andrew Huseman and Kennedy sophomore Connor Koberg are three shots back. Valley junior Jeff Swegle, the 2011 individual champion, shot 77.
