State boys' golf: Valley seeking to defend its state title

It should be a clubhouse reunion at Polk City’s Tournament Club of Iowa this weekend.

Nine of the 12 teams teeing off in today’s Class 4-A state boys’ golf meet qualified for last year’s championships, including all of the top eight.

Defending team champion West Des Moines Valley returns after winning a competitive district meet across Saylorville Lake at Jester Park on Tuesday.

The Tigers won by 17 strokes last year at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, and return defending individual champ Jeff Swegle.

Waukee’s Grant Campbell and Ames senior Dustin Atkinson shot 68s at districts, tying for the lowest score of any individual qualifiers.

Teams arriving in Polk City without a state appearance in 2011 are Cedar Rapids Xavier, Johnston and Pleasant Valley. Individual qualifiers traveling without a team include Jared Deines from Cedar Falls, Indianola’s Britton Vanderlinden and Bobby Wolfe of North Scott.

Competition starts at noon today, and at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
