MUSCATINE, Ia. — Penalty kicks are rarely practiced at Glenwood.
But on Thursday, they were perfected.
Third-ranked Glenwood (18-1) converted on all five penalty kicks to beat No.6 Union.
“We practiced once,” said Glenwood senior Makenzie Evans.
Evans delivered the fifth and winning kick, sending her Glenwood teammates scattering onto the field.
Union (15-4) tied the match 1-1 when Dayton Powell scored the equalizer with just 39.5 seconds remaining.

The goal set up Evans’ heroics.
“I just had to focus on it, take a deep breath, and put it in my spot,” she said.

Muscatine, Ia. — North Scott soccer players wear red and white uniforms, but some of them wore blue and pink in their hair Thursday.
The team has used chalk and dye to give the players a bonding opportunity.
North Scott (11-9) earned its first-ever state tournament victory. Shalynn Eldredge-McMillan and Chloe Gottschalk scored goals.
The school has been unbeaten in postseason since the hair treatments began.
“We wanted to put the fun back into it,” Eldredge-McMillan said.
Dallas Center-Grimes ended at 15-3.
Ali O’Brien scored her team’s only goal on an assist by Dani Dunphy. Both girls are freshmen — two of 11 on the team’s state tournament roster.
“I wish I could come back,” Dunphy said. “I really want to be back here, right now.”
Dallas Center-Grimes will graduate only one senior from the young squad.
“There weren’t many expectations for this team,” Dallas Center-Grimes coach Dan James said.
“In the fourth game of the season, we lost to Johnston 5-1, but it was 1-1 with 8 minutes left. That’s when I thought we might have something special.”
