NEVADA 1, GILBERT 0

Muscatine, Ia. — Nevada’s best friend was Gilbert’s worst enemy.
Fifth-ranked Nevada held off a late offensive run by No. 4 Gilbert in a 1-0 Class 1-A quarterfinal victory at the Muscatine Soccer Complex Thursday afternoon.
The Tigers (15-4) had three shots ricochet off the crossbars in the final seven minutes.
“I told Dan (Gilbert coach Dan Jones) ‘sometimes our best defender was the post and we got lucky,’ ” Nevada coach Randy Davis said.

A resource for Nevada turned out to be a killer for Gilbert.
Davis watched as a flurry of shots by Gilbert in final 10 minutes just missed tying the match.
“It was scary,” Nevada’s Ellie Cassabaum said. “We were all up off our seats.”
Cassabaum gave Nevada a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute on a breakaway goal.
“That was a big help to get one early,” Cassabaum said.
Nevada (15-4) survived the second-half scare, needing only Cassabaum’s goal.
“We’ve got to make one of those,” Jones said.
Gilbert (15-4) handed Nevada’s its first loss with a 2-1 win over the Cubs in a shootout earlier in the season.
“We just refocused and said our next goal is state,” Davis said.
