The Fond du Lac girls volleyball team won sectional finals against West Bend East in each of the last two years. The Suns finally turned the tables on Fondy this year, ending the Cardinals’ season 25-23, 25-16, 25-18 on Saturday afternoon in West Bend.
First-year Fondy coach Kevin Santry said that close first game made a big difference in the outcome of the match.
“It was a tough, close first game. It could have gone either way,” Santry said. “West Bend just made points at the end, and it took the wind out of our sails.”
Jenna Rosenthal had 14 kills and two blocks but most of the stats were modest for Fondy. Also in the attack, Brianna Wagner added six kills, Jenny Smit led with five assists and Allison Duley had four.
Defensively, Kyra Gravelle and Sadie Warner tied for the team lead with five digs, and Warner blocked two shots.
The 10th-seeded Cardinals had been 4-4-2 in the month of October after struggling in the early part of the season.
“The girls should be proud of the season,” Santry said. “It ended a little too soon, but the girls should be proud of what they did.”
Lourdes 3, Laconia 1
Laconia had to battle back from a two game deficit and couldn’t complete the comeback losing to Lourdes 25-16, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21.
Morgan Gunnink had 12 kills, Haley Smith had 30 assists and Nikki Guell finished with 20 digs.
Laconia coach Troy Pluim said his team’s serve receive struggled.
“Their serves hurt us. We didn’t pass real well,” he said. “Their serving put us on our heels and we never really recovered.”
After winning game three, Laconia (22-11 overall record) was tied at 19 in the fourth game before Lourdes took control for good.
“I’m glad we played hard to the end,” Pluim said. “We could have folded the tent and went home, but we played hard the last two sets.”
Howards Grove 3, New Holstein 1
New Holstein lost to Howards Grove 25-21, 25-15, 12-25, 27-25.
Tori Zipperer led the team with six kills and Hailee Olson assisted on 14 points. Defensively, Tori Zipperer led the team with seven digs while Tara Zipperer was one back with six. Kelly Schmitz and Tristen Guelig contributed 2 blocks each, and Olson served two aces.
The Fondy boys team went 3-0 to win the championship of a four-team tournament at Green Bay Southwest.
The Cardinals beast Green Bay Southwest/West, Green Bay Preble/East and Neenah with no game decided by fewer than eight points.
“We were just consistent,” said Fondy coach Royal Smit. “We stayed focused and we executed. The key word for us this year was execute and we’ve followed through on that.”
Logan Wendt had 72 assists, nine aces and six blocks for Fondy. Collin Pickart led the team with 37 assists to go with 12 digs, and Mackenzie Nick served 11 aces.
Charlie Andrew led the defense with 19 digs, while Aaron Wendels blocked eight shots to go with his 16 kills.
