Swimmers dive into All-City on Saturday

An opportunity for city swimmers to record state-qualifying times presents itself on Saturday when the All-City Swimming and Diving Meets pits cross-town rivals against one another.

Harper Creek will host Battle Creek Central and Lakeview on Saturday for the All-City Meet, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

The Spartans will attempt to continue their reign as the top team in the city for a decade, as Lakeview will be vying for its 10th straight All-City championship.

League tennis titles up for grabs

Area boys’ tennis teams will contend for a pair of conference championships on Saturday.

Portage and Harper Creek will host the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference Meet. The 14-team meet, which is split between Gold and Silver Tournaments, will include locals Battle Creek Central, Harper Creek, Lakeview, Coldwater, Gull Lake and Marshall.

The Kalamazoo Valley Association will be at Galesburg-Augusta, beginning at 9 a.m. The Rams will host four other league foes at the tournament, including Pennfield.

Area teams earn ranked

Several area varsity teams find themselves ranked among the top squads in the state, according to their respective coaches association polls:

* In volleyball, Gull Lake is No. 2 in Class A; Delton Kellogg is No. 10 and Bronson is honorable mention in Class C; and St. Philip is No. 1 and Athens is honorable mention in Class D.

* In boys’ tennis, Lakeview is No. 8 in Division 2.

* In boys’ soccer, Coldwater is honorable mention in Division 2.

* In girls’ golf, Lakeview is No. 3 in Division 2.

* In girls’ cross country, Gull Lake is No. 7 in Division 2 and Homer is No. 2 in Division 4.

* In boys’ cross country, Gull Lake is No. 7 in Division 2.
