Team race heats up

With four legs of the Cloverbelt Valley Girls Golf League in the books, the championship picture has turned into a one-horse race.

The battle for second, however, is shaping up to be quite a stretch run.

Osseo-Fairchild scored a 184 on Tuesday at Stevens Point Country Club and is in command of the team standings, but Stevens Point Area Senior High, Marshfield and Eau Claire Regis are within six points in the cumulative standings with three CVGL meets left to play.

Eau Claire Regis was second with 211, SPASH followed with a 218 and Marshfield was right behind with a 221 Tuesday, respectively.. In the overall standings, Osseo-Fairchild has 56 points, ahead of second-place Regis with 42. The next two teams, Marshfield (40) and SPASH (36), are within striking distance of Regis.

“We’re working hard to be consistent to stay in the team race,” said SPASH junior Kristin Wendorf, who shot a 67 in the blustery conditions. “I tried not to think about the wind, but sometimes it was hard hitting into it. There were times today when I really thought I hit the ball well and it really didn’t go very far.”

The Panthers were led by Kelley Krayecki’s 9-hole round of 51, while teammates Hannah Kienbaum and Katlyn Dalsbo both came in with 54s.

Marshfield’s Molly Field and Jordan Fitzgerald both shot 52s, while Macy Fitzgerald was one stroke behind with a 53.

“Golf just wouldn’t be worth playing if you didn’t have good and bad days,” said Field, unhappy with her round. “Today I got down on myself and wasn’t focusing the way I needed to. My game just wasn’t coming together.

“When I have a day like this I try even harder to do better next time and when I do have a good round, it’s that much more rewarding,” Field added.

Stacy Lehman’s 52 was the low score for Wisconsin Rapids, while Ariana De Las Alas was right behind with a 53 and Kayla Thomas had a score of 57 to round out the Rapids golfers.

“I didn’t have too much trouble with the wind,” Lehman said.My swing felt good during warmups so I just kind of swung away today. My driving and putting were good today.”

Neillsville, in seventh overall, was led by Avriel Voigt, who shot a 56.
