The St. Cloud Tech boys tennis team fell 5-2 to Mahtomedi in the first round of the Class 2A state boys tennis team tournament Tuesday afternoon at the University of Minnesota.
The Tigers were then eliminated with a 6-1 loss to Maple Grove in the consolation bracket later in the day. Tech finished 15-5 on the season. It was the first time Tech had been at the state team tournament since 2005.
“It was a great reward for our kids to get this far, especially for our seniors,” Tech head coach Paul Bates said. “They’ve really helped build our program back up to the state-tournament level. Everybody is good down here, but our kids competed hard.”
Both of Tech’s wins against Mahtomedi came at singles. At No. 3, the Tigers’ Chris Mavetz earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Cooper Schwieters. Tech’s other win came at No. 4 where Riley Peterson downed Ryan Meger 6-2, 6-3.
Against Maple Grove, Tech’s lone win came at No. 3 doubles where Jay Kedrowski and Andy Foley downed Jacob Endres and Dylan Steman 0-6, 5-2 in a match that ended up being a default.
