MINNEAPOLIS – St. Cloud Tech sophomore Riley Bates is the lone area participant who will play in the Class 2A state tennis tournament today at Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota.

Bates beat Bloomington Jefferson’s Luke Robertson 6-1, 6-1 on Thursday in the consolation quarterfinals.

Bates plays Princeton’s Isaiah Mayerchak at 8 a.m. today in the consolation semifinals. St. Paul Highland Park’s Maalik Konop defeated Bates 6-4, 7-6 (9) in the opening round of the tennis tournament.

In Class 2A doubles, Tech’s team of juniors Luke Zwiener and Christopher Mavetz lost twice.

The Tigers were beaten by Minneapolis South’s duo of David Yanagita and Jesse Sprinkel 6-3, 6-0 in the consolation quarterfinals.

Bloomington Jefferson’s Matthew McNutt and Tim Larson beat Zwiener and Mavetz 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round.

Class A

MINNEAPOLIS – Foley’s doubles team of seniors Benjamin Hageman and Sam Wittwer lost twice at the state tournament at Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center.

In the consolation quarterfinals, Virginia’s team of Blair Seitz and Marc Krebsbach beat Hageman and Wittwer 6-3, 6-2. In the opening round of the tournament, Staples-Motley’s Josh Solway and Shane Suess beat Hageman and Wittwer 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round.
