Oak Harbor senior Ashley LaFountain exceeded the goals her father and coach Rick LaFountain had for her as a freshman.
LaFountain returned to state for the fourth time Friday after four consecutive Sandusky Bay Conference and sectional titles, and her first district crown this season.
LaFountain earned the second victory of her career at state with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Tipp City’s Sierra Nellessen. LaFountain was designated second-team all-Ohio.
“She played really well,” Coach LaFountain said. “She was down 4-2 in the first set and came back to pull it out. She played smart anticipating. She’d never beaten ( Nellessen) before. It was a nice win.”
LaFountain fell 6-1, 6-2 to Rachel Nelson of West Holmes. Nelson was Ohio doubles champ as a freshman, second at singles as a sophomore and won a state title last season.
“As a dad and coach, I couldn’t be more proud of my daughter,” Coach LaFountain said. “She ended with 139 wins and 12 losses. On the court she did a super job and she did a great job in the classroom.
“Four trips to state for singles was an incredible career and it was an incredible ride watching her in high school. It went fast. We’ll see what comes next.”
