THE WINNER: Chiaka Ogbogu
School: Coppell (Texas)
Athletic achievement: She led the Cowgirls to a 49-3 record and the Class 5A state title this past season. Ogbogu recorded 486 kills and 144 blocks while posting a kill percentage of .555. A 2012-13 Under Armour first team All-American, Ogbogu was named Class 4A-5A Player of the Year by the Texas Girls Coaches Association and is a member of the LoneStarVolleyball.com All-Texas First Team.
Academic excellence: Ogbogu has maintained a B average in the classroom.
Exemplary character: An active member of her church youth group and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, she has volunteered locally on behalf of the Coppell Community Gardens and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
“She’s a very talented player,” said Tricia Roos, head coach at Ryan (Denton, Texas). “She jumps high, makes smart decisions on the front row and blocks extremely well. It’s very hard to get around her block.”
THE FUTURE: Ogbogu has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball on scholarship at the University of Texas beginning in the fall of 2013.
