The WIAA Individual State Tennis Tournament begins later today at Nielsen Stadium in Madison and the Oshkosh area will be well represented among the 252 competitors in the two divisions.
In Division 1, Oshkosh West’s Liz Edsell returns to state in singles, while the Wildcats’ top two doubles pairings of Hannah Dexheimer and Bailey Sagen and Alicia Craig and Katie Buege qualified.
Dexheimer and Sagen, both juniors, who each went to state last year with different partners, are seeded fifth in the bracket with a 31-1 record.
Oshkosh North’s top doubles team of Meg Hartzell and Alyssa Schafer returns the Spartans to the state meet after a one-year hiatus. The last flight to qualify for state from North was the doubles team of Brittany Glatting and Bryn Hartzell — Meg’s older sister.
Lourdes Academy hadn’t had a state qualifier in tennis since the 2007 tournament when Megan Shallbetter went as a special qualifier. It was 2006 when Mary Coleman qualified out of sectionals. That is until this season.
Senior Lianna Hawi earned a spot in the Division 2 singles field at sectional and returns the Knights presence in Madison.
