It didn’t take long for the Marshfield volleyball team to get rolling Saturday night.
Once the Tigers did they never looked back registering a three game sweep of Menomonie 25-11, 25-16, 25-22 in a WIAA Division 1 regional championship match.
Marshfield (23-7) advances to play either Eau Claire North or Rhinelander on Thursday in Chippewa Falls.
Marshfield impressed early on using runs of 6-0, 6-2 and 10-4 to nail down the opening game.
“We started off strong,” said Darian Molter, who led the Tigers with 17 digs. “We progressively made more mistakes, but we came ready to play.”
The Tigers continued their dominance in the second game, riding an early 7-3 run, before closing it out with strong with a 15-6 run as the Mustangs appeared to have no answer for the powerful Tigers.
“I think we came out strong after a good week of practice,” said Marshfield’s Tiffany Stargardt, who had a team-high 17 kills. “We were able to sweep them tonight. They played hard. We may have let down a little bit or been overconfident, but we finished strong.”
Menomonie did have an answer in the final game and led 18-17 late only to see Marshfield’s Mikala Sebastian score on back-to-back kills to give the Tigers a lead they wouldn’t lose.
“Menomonie had so much energy and they kept that up the whole match,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “That was the same as last year. We know we can come back if we have to. We come together as a team. It’s like they say, ‘It’s time to go,’ I guess.”
Courtney Bauer chipped in with 13 kills and added 14 assists. Tori Nanstad led the Tigers with 20 assists.
