It’s time for the golf state tournament and perhaps the biggest surprise is the only area team playing in any of the three classes.
The St. Cloud Cathedral girls are back in the state tournament for the first time since 2007.
They are scheduled to tee off starting at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at The Ridges of Sand Creek near Jordan.
The final round is Wednesday.
Getting to state is a great achievement for the Crusaders, who are a young team.
Expected to play Tuesday for Cathedral are Lauren Herker, Kelsey Osendorf, Ann Berdan, Erin Stocker, Greta Egerman and Lucy Gaetz.
Also competing in the girls competition is Rocori’s Marja Sorenson and Becker’s Kourtney Williams. Williams will be one of the serious contenders for medalist honors.
Minnewaska Area is considered the favorite.
Also competing in Class 2A in the afternoon boys’ competition are Cathedral’s Garret McCormick, Sauk Centre’s Robby Polipnick, Becker’s Zach Johanns, Albany’s Jordan LeClair and Melrose’s Wesley Dickhaus.
Like the girls, the boys competition wraps up Wednesday.
Three area females qualified for the Class 3A tournament Tuesday and Wednesday at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.
St. Cloud Tech’s Bobbie Bohlig and Meagan Larkin and St. Cloud Apollo’s Nikki Torgerson all compete.
Bohlig, headed to Minnesota State-Mankato to continue her golf career, is coming off a Section 8-3A individual championship at Long Prairie.
The Class A tournament is Tuesday and Wednesday at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker. Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s Peyton Miller is competing in the girls’ division.
