Tom's tips: Expect a crowd at Apollo-Tech volleyball

Perhaps the best-attended volleyball match in St. Cloud is when Apollo and Tech meet.

The two resume their rivalry at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tech.

Apollo went into the weekend 0-2 in the Central Lakes Conference and 1-2 overall. The Eagles’ lone win is 3-2 over Big Lake. They have a new head coach, Rhonda Juell.

Juell, a former Apollo assistant, replaces Leah Merten, who resigned. The Eagles have three seniors on their roster: outside hitter Melissa Gebhardt, right side hitter Hannah Kalla and defensive specialist Katrina Johnson.

Tech, under veteran head coach Kristy Husen, has two seniors on its roster: setter Katie Honer and outside hitter Lindsey Kerr. The Tigers are 1-1 in the Central Lakes and 1-2 overall. Their win is 3-2 over Sauk Rapids.

Expect a high-intensity matchup.

Here’s a quick look at some other area events:

* St. Cloud Tech at St. Cloud Apollo girls tennis, 4:30 p.m.

Tech (3-0 Central Lakes, 3-0 overall) is young, but is the clear favorite in this one. Apollo (1-3, 1-6) is very inexperienced and playing in a co-op with Sauk Rapids.

* Sartell vs. Little Falls boys soccer, 5 p.m. at Belle Prairie Township.

Sartell (3-2) and Little Falls (1-3) are no longer in the same conference, with the Flyers joining the Granite Ridge last season. But this is an interesting Section 8A matchup.

* Little Falls at St. Cloud Cathedral volleyball, 7:15 p.m.

Little Falls won the first Granite Ridge Conference title last season and is trying to gain experience to make another run. The Flyers (1-1 GRC, 2-6 overall) will be challenged by a young Cathedral (1-1, 1-2) squad.

* Lucky Lindy Invitational cross country meet, 3:50 p.m. at Little Falls Country Club.

This is the grand-daddy of them all when it comes to area cross country meets. And, it again has an impressive field with a large chunk of area schools including Apollo, Cathedral and Tech, and Hopkins, Perham and Staples-Motley.

* Grand Rapids at Tech football, 7 p.m.

Finally a home game for the Tigers, who opened with two straight on the road (at Alexandria and Brainerd). This one will be at St. Cloud State’s Husky Stadium.

* Rocori at Apollo football, 7 p.m.

The defending state champion Spartans take on the improving Eagles.

* Cathedral at Albany football, 7 p.m.

The conference rivalry resumes as Albany is in its first year in the Granite Ridge.

* Sauk Rapids Invitational volleyball tournament, 9 a.m.

Annandale, Dassel-Cokato, Elk River, Holdingford, Kimball, Little Falls, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Melrose, Mora, Onamia, Pierz, Rocori, Royalton, Sauk Centre and Cathedral participate.
