The biggest regular-season cross country in the state meet takes place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Stones Throw Golf Course in Milaca.
It’s the 42nd Annual Milaca Mega Meet.
And, guess what? It’s big.
It’s a virtual who’s who of the state’s top teams and individuals. It’s a great time for area runners and teams to find out how they stack up against teams outside their sections and area.
Foley, led by the Charlie Lawrence, will be there, as will St. Cloud Cathedral’s boys and girls teams.
Lawrence is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class A.
Here’s a quick look at the rest of the week:
* Pierz Pioneer Stampede cross country invitational, 4:30 p.m. at Pierz Golf Course.
Here’s the tune-up to the Mega Meet. This is a favorite course among a number of area athletes and it’s always a highly competitive meet. It also is a host to subsection and section meets, which makes it a good one to get used to to most area runners in Class A.
* Brainerd at Sartell girls swimming, 6 p.m.
These are the top two teams in the Central Lakes Conference. Sartell is 3-0 in the conference and 3-0 overall and the defending state Class A champion. Brainerd is 3-0 in conference meets, 3-1 overall and always an outstanding squad.
* Sartell at Sauk Rapids boys soccer, 5 p.m.
Both teams are trying to move up in the CLC. Sartell (3-2, 5-4) has had the upper hand in past seasons, but Sauk Rapids (1-1-3, 3-2-3) is definitely an improved squad and giving everyone a tough match.
* Willmar vs. St. Cloud Tech girls tennis, 4:30 p.m. at South Junior High.
Willmar (4-2, 9-3) is a definite top-four team in the conference and Tech (5-0, 5-1) is trying to be the top team. This should be competitive.
* Sartell at St. Cloud Apollo girls soccer, 7 p.m. at Michie Field.
Sartell (3-1-2, 6-1-2) is leading the CLC, though by one point over Brainerd (2-0-3, 2-0-3) and Apollo (3-2-1, 4-3-1). Apollo won the first meeting, so this should be interesting.
* Zimmerman at Becker football, 7 p.m.
What could be better than two state-ranked, undefeated teams playing a big Granite Ridge Conference game?
That’s what ninth-ranked Zimmerman (3-0) and fifth-ranked Becker (3-0) are up to here. Both are Class 4A powers.
* Pierz at Kimball football, 7 p.m.
Pierz (2-1) hasn’t lost to Kimball (3-0) in quite a while. This is the matchup of the week in the Central Minnesota Conference.
Kimball is getting votes in the state Class 2A poll.
