Tom's tips: Rocori can move up with a win over Tech

It has been a strange season in South Sub-Section 8-3A volleyball.

Succinctly, everyone beats everyone, then loses to everyone else.

If the south seedings were announced today, they’d likely look something like this in this order: Monticello (9-9), Rocori (8-11), Sartell (8-11), St. Cloud Tech (6-12), Sauk Rapids (8-14) and Big Lake (6-16).

St. Cloud Apollo (2-16) is playing in North Sub-Section 8-3A, where Fergus Falls (19-3) and Bemidji (14-3) are the prohibitive favorites.

Rocori rather quietly has emerged as the best area team in the Central Lakes Conference with a 5-4 record.

The Spartans can help stake their claim to a top seed with a win over Tech at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Rocori beat the Tigers 3-1 Sept. 6 at Tech. But like the rest of the sub-section, the Spartans’ results are uneven. They lost 3-1 to Apollo on Sept. 27, then had 3-2 wins over Alexandria and Sartell.

Tech’s last conference match was a 3-2 win over Sauk Rapids on Tuesday.

It’s a match that should entertain.

A quick look at the rest of the week:

* Tech Invitational cross country meet, 4 p.m. at Oak Hill Community School.

It’s the big cross country meet of the week.

Teams attending include: Bemidji, Brainerd, Duluth East, Moorhead, Princeton, Rocori, St. Cloud Apollo, St. Cloud Catheral, Sartell, Sauk Rapids and Willmar.

* Cathedral at Albany volleyball, 7:15 p.m.

Albany went into the weekend 8-0 in the Granite Ridge Conference and well on its way to winning the title in its first season in the league.

Cathedral (6-2, 13-7) is always competitive and hopes to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Huskies earlier this season in St. Cloud.

* Holdingford at Maple Lake football, 7 p.m.

The Central Minnesota Conference title could be decided with this game.

Holdingford (5-0 CMC, 5-1 overall) is the last unbeaten team in the conference.

Maple Lake (4-1, 5-1) was considered the preseason favorite and was ranked fourth in the state in Class 2A last week before the Irish were bumped 14-7 on Friday at Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.
