Tom's tips: Short week wraps up fall's regular season

That was fast.

It seems like only a few days ago when fall practice began, though it actually was mid-August.

Raise your hand if the last two months have been a blur.

Believe it or not, the last round of regular-season prep football games is here. Teams play Wednesday because of the annual teachers’ meetings/convention.

After Wednesday, the first round of the playoffs is the following Tuesday and then winners play that Saturday.

There also are some huge section soccer matches Tuesday and Thursday. Girls tennis players will know who is headed to the state tournament, and the cross country and swimming seasons are winding down, too.

Here’s a quick look at a short week:

Tuesday

* Section 8A boys and girls soccer playoffs, to be determined.

There was still a Saturday round of matches to be played when this column was due.

Sartell’s girls were the top seed in South subsection 8A.

St. Cloud Cathedral is No. 2. Tuesday’s winners play Thursday at the North Subsection 8A winner.

In boys soccer, Cathedral is No. 1 and St. Cloud Apollo is No. 2 in South subsection 8A.

The final is 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Cloud State.

In 8-2A, Tech won its first game in a shootout over Buffalo and needed a win Saturday to advance to Tuesday’s final.

Wednesday

* Holdingford at Rockford football, 7 p.m.

Holdingford (6-1) needs a win over the Rockets (2-5) to win the Central Minnesota Conference title outright and likely earn the No. 1 seed in its section.

* Becker at Mora football, 7 p.m.

Becker (6-1) can clinch the Granite Ridge Conference title by beating Mora (2-5), which is coming off a 36-28 win at Cathedral.

* Pierz at Maple Lake football, 7 p.m.

Pierz (6-1) and Maple Lake (5-2) are the other two top teams in the Central Minnesota. Both are trying to gain some momentum for sectional play.

* Rocori vs. Tech, 7 p.m. at Husky Stadium.

Rocori (4-3) and Tech (3-4) are both desperate for a victory.

Both have three-game losing streaks. And for both, all the losses have been tough and close. Rocori fell 7-0 to Monticello on Friday. Meanwhile, Tech lost 26-20 to Apollo.
