It’s getting to that point in the prep football season when teams start taking a peek at their section to see where they stand.
In Section 8-5A, Moorhead is one of two remaining unbeaten teams. The other is Sartell.
The Spuds are ranked eighth in the state Class 5A poll by The Associated Press. They play 3-1 St. Cloud Tech at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Cloud State’s Husky Stadium.
Sartell, meanwhile, is host to 3-1 Fergus Falls at 7 p.m. Friday.
Both games will help determine seeding in the six-team section.
And if Sartell and Tech win Friday, they will play each other at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at Husky Stadium.
Those are two of a number of area events worth taking a peek at for area prep fans. Here’s a quick list of some other events:
Tuesday
* Paynesville Invitational cross country meet, 4:15 p.m. at Koronis Hills Golf Course.
It’s the big meet of the week in the area, though a lot of teams will be coming off Saturday’s Mega Meet in Milaca.
Wednesday
* Andover vs. Tech girls tennis, 3:30 p.m. at South Courts.
Tech (8-0 Central Lakes, 8-1 overall) is on its way to winning the conference title and this is a tuneup against a worthy Twin Cities opponent.
Thursday
* Apollo vs. Tech girls and boys soccer, 6 and 8 p.m. at Husky Stadium.
The girls play at 6 p.m. Apollo (4-3-1, 5-4-2) would like to even the regular-season series after Tech (1-3-2, 1-7-2) won the first game at Apollo.
The boys’ game should be really good, too. Apollo is 7-0-1 in the conference and 9-1-1 overall and closing in on a conference title. Tech (5-1-0, 8-1-0) is right behind and the Tigers’ lone loss was at Apollo.
Friday
* Becker at Albany football, 7 p.m. at Michael Field.
Becker (4-0) appears unstoppable after beating previously unbeaten Zimmerman 56-22 Friday. The Bulldogs are ranked fifth in the state in Class 4A and Zimmerman was ninth.
Albany (3-1), a Class 3A program, has won three straight after a season-opening 37-22 loss to Zimmerman.
It’s a clash of styles, too. Becker has the area’s best passing game. Albany is one of the area’s better running teams.
Saturday
* Sauk Rapids at Rocori football, 1 p.m. at Virant Memorial Field.
Rocori (4-0) is ranked second in the state in Class 4A and lucky to be unbeaten after slipping past Willmar 22-21 on a last-second touchdown. Sauk Rapids (0-4) could make its season with an upset.
