The St. Philip High volleyball team — the multi-time defending Class D state champion that is again ranked No. 1 in the state this season — improved to 54-1-1 overall and 8-0 in the SCAA with a sweep over visiting Jackson Christian on Thursday.
Coach Vicky Groat’s Tigers won by scores of 25-5, 25-5, 25-9.
St. Philip was led by Amanda McKinzie with three aces, six kills and five digs; Lenae Lesiow with two aces and seven assists; Natalie Gallagher with three aces and 10 digs; and Casey Gallagher with five assists, three digs and one ace.
Calhoun Christian 2-0 at tri-meet (Tue.): Calhoun Christian improved to 19-2-1 overall and 8-1 in the Mid-South Conference with a 25-10, 25-13 triumph over Marshall Academy and a 25-21, 25-13 victory over host Burr Oak.
On the day, Rebecca Penrod had six aces; A.J. Moody had 10 digs and eight kills; Sarah Butts had nine digs and 12 assists; Denise Penrod had 12 assists; and Kelsey Snowball had seven kills.
