TR, Kiel set for regional openers

The Two Rivers and Kiel baseball teams are set to begin the WIAA Summer Baseball Tournament today, with one squaring off in familiar territory while the other will be on the road for its regional opener.

For Two Rivers (8-12, 6-12 Eastern Wisconsin Conference), the No. 12 seed will travel to No. 5 Oostburg (11-10, 11-7 Central Lakeshore Conference), a team it defeated 19-1 at home earlier this season. However, Two Rivers coach Lee Nebel said he doesn’t see the Raiders’ June win over the Flying Dutchman as an indicator of how the regional opener will be, as Oostburg sat five of its starters in that game.

“I expect them to be a tough team,” Nebel said. “We have to cut down on our errors. … It is always tough winning on the road, so I expect a tough game.”

Brett Kasper is scheduled to be the starting pitcher for Two Rivers, which was 3-6 on the road this season while Oostburg was 5-4 at home. Kasper boasts a 5-4 record and a 2.01 earned run average.

“We are going to go as far as Brett takes us,” Nebel added.

No. 6-seeded Kiel (5-18, 4-14 Eastern Wisconsin Conference) will host No. 11 seed Sheboygan Lutheran-Kohler (10-10, 10-8 Central Lakeshore Conference), a team the Raiders did not face this season.

The Crusaders enter the game having lost three straight road games and four of their last six games overall. Kiel on the other hand is 2-9 at home and enters the regional opener having lost eight of its last nine games.
