Tri-Valley, Zanesville earn little respect in soccer postseason draw

By

LEWIS CENTER — Zanesville and Tri-Valley were given little respect at the Division I Central District draw Sunday at Olentangy High School.

Both teams have records well above .500 but were unable to turn those into a good seeding.

Despite their 9-2-2 record, the Scotties were given the 28th seed out of 41 teams. They will travel to 13th seed Pickerington North (7-5-2) at 7 p.m. Oct. 20.

Tri-Valley coach Dale Ross wasn’t surprised by his team’s low seed, saying the more centrally located teams tend to stick together in the voting. He also wasn’t disappointed with their tournament matchup.

“I like our chances. I think we got the best spot in the bracket of what was left over,” he said. “The bad thing is we might have to meet the No. 1 team in the state if we keep winning. But, we’d have to do that anyway.”

Zanesville (8-4-1) was tabbed as the 30th seed. The Blue Devils will host 35-seed Columbus Northland (7-4-1) at 7 p.m. Oct. 17. A victory would send them to face third seed Hilliard Darby (11-1-2) at 7 p.m. Oct. 20.

Philo (11-3) grabbed the No. 2 seed at the Division II sectional draw at River View. The Electrics will face No. 6 New Philadelphia (2-11-1) at 5 p.m. Oct. 17.

A win would move them to the upper bracket sectional final at noon Oct. 20 against the winner of No. 4 Tuscarawas Valley (9-3-2) and No. 5 River View (4-7-3).

In the lower bracket, Maysville (8-5-1) was the third seed and will open at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 against the winner of seventh-seeded John Glenn (0-13) and No. 8 West Holmes (0-13-1), who play at 5 p.m. Oct. 15.

Morgan (0-11) is the ninth seed and faces top seed Dover (9-0-5) at 7 p.m. Oct. 16. The lower bracket sectional final is at 3 p.m. Oct. 20. All games will be played at River View.

West Muskingum grabbed the No. 2 seed at the Division III sectional draw at Maysville.

The Tornadoes (8-6-1) will open against No. 5 Rosecrans (3-9-3) at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18.

The winner will face either No. 3 Coshocton (7-4-3) or No. 7 Monroe Central (1-11) in the sectional final at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 20.

The West M girls earned the second seed at the Division III girls draw at West M.

The Lady Tornadoes (8-7) will face the fifth seed Rosecrans (8-7) at 5 p.m. Oct. 16.

The winner would move to the lower bracket sectional final at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 against either third seed St. Clairsville (9-6) or fourth seed Ridgewood (9-2-2). All games will be played at West M.

In the upper bracket, Tri-Valley (11-3-1) was given the third seed. The Lady Dawgs will open against No. 8 Maysville (2-13) at 5 p.m. Oct. 17.

A win would put them in the sectional final at 1 p.m. Oct. 20 against the winner of top seeded West Holmes (9-4-1) and No. 9 Morgan (1-10-1). All games will be played at Philo.

Zanesville (9-3-2) was given the 28th seed out of 36 teams in the Division I Central District draw. The Lady Devils will begin their tournament at 20th seed Watkins Memorial (8-4-1) at 7 p.m. Oct. 18.

The Lady Tornadoes (17-2) jumped to the lower bracket and will open against No. 9. Bellaire (6-11) on Oct. 18.

“Even though we’re No. 2, I’m happy with where we’re at,” West M coach Brent McLoughlin said. “It’s better to be the No. 2 seed sometimes. Now, we’ve just got to got out and play.”
