School: Tulare Union
Season: In his fifth year with the program, led the Redskins to their first East Yosemite League championship in over 20 years. The team reached the Central Section Division II championship game, but came up short against No. 1 San Joaquin Memorial. Tulare Union defeated all of the West Yosemite League schools it played against.
Comments: “The season we had, we expected to win the EYL. We knew Monache would be tough. We weren’t sure where we’d be as far as Valley because we came up out of Division III. I think we surprised a lot of people. Our goal was to beat as many WYL teams as we faced. The EYL is always looked down on from other leagues. The EYL has been down for years. I don’t know when the last dominant team came out of the EYL. It had to be years ago with Monache and Exeter. The girls have been dominating, but sometimes they have trouble with the top WYL teams. It felt good for the kids to get some respect.
” … We’ve accomplished a lot more, a lot sooner than I thought we would. It has come a lot quicker. When I first got this group of kids as freshmen, I thought OK, we might be able to contend for Valley in two or three years. I thought we could contend for one, I didn’t think we would contend for two or three.
” … I’d like to thank my players for working hard and allowing me to be in position to get the coach of the year award.”
