Visiting Union blew out Mid-Eastern Conference rival Burris 71-37 Saturday night in Ball Gym.
The Rockets (2-0, 1-0 MEC) lived at the free-throw line. The officials called Burris for 32 fouls, and Union sank 37-of-51 free throws.
Five Rockets scored in double figures. Keegan Guffey hit 9-of-11 free throws and paced Union with 17 points. Willie Eviston buried 9-of-11 free throws, too, and followed with 14. Tanner Cates knocked down 8-of-10 free throws and finished with 13 points. Jason Bowling scored 11 points and Spencer Shore followed with 10 to round out the double-figure scorers for Union.
Burris (1-2, 0-1 MEC) shot poorly both from the field and from the free-throw line. The Owls sank only 14-of-55 shots and 3-of-16 free throws.
Ryan Morey scored 11 points to lead the Owls in scoring. Union held top Burris scorer Mack Rathbun to just seven points on 3-of-18 shooting.
* Northeastern 73, Cowan 46: The Blackhawks fell to 0-4 on the season after losing to a team that their coach Mike King considers to be one of the best on their schedule. Jon Miller hit six 3-pointers to pace the Blackhawks in scoring with 18 points. Stewart Kerr scored 12 to account for the only other Blackhawk in double-figure points. Kerr, Tyler Burch and Calvin Furniss shared team-high honors with three rebounds each.
* Frankton 79, Wes-Del 58: The Warriors were outscored 25-13 in the third quarter to fall behind by 17 points. Justin Evans led Wes-Del (0-4) in scoring with 20 points, and Sam Paul added 18 points.
* Elwood 55, Daleville 43: The Panthers expanded their eight-point lead to double figures in the third quarter to pull away from the Broncos. James Tungate led Daleville (1-3) in scoring with 16 points. Elliott Jackson followed with 13 points and he also grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
