The football game billed as Victory for Veterans lived up to its name in more ways than one, as experienced Charlotte defeated a young Eaton Rapids team 48-14 on Sept. 7.
Senior quarterback Ryan Bartolacci ran for 120 yards and four touchdowns for the Orioles, who improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in CAAC Gold play with the win.
James Cruz and Jacob Oberlin-Scott scored touchdowns for Eaton Rapids, who dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Latrell Levanduski opened the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and the first of Bryce Prudden’s six successful extra-point kicks gave Charlotte a 7-0 lead, but the Greyhounds responded with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Cruz from Jared McDaniel to cut the lead to 7-6 going into the second quarter.
It was all Charlotte from there, as Bartolacci scored twice in the second, on a 1-yard quarterback sneak and a 16-yard run to give the Orioles a 20-6 lead at the break.
Bartolacci scored twice more in the third quarter, on another 1-yard plunge and from seven yards out, and Lindsey Prudden picked off a pass and ran it back 15 yards for a touchdown to make the score 41-6 and start the running clock going into the fourth quarter.
Cameron Lake added to Charlotte’s lead with a 5-yard touchdown run early in the fourth, before Oberlin-Scott ran in from seven yards out for the Greyhounds to make the final score 48-14.
With the win, the Orioles stretched their winning streak over the Greyhounds to 20. Charlotte has lost to Eaton Rapids in football just once since 1983.
The Orioles will face another historical rival this week when they travel to Mason for a key CAAC Gold clash on Friday, Sept. 21.
