Vianney upends Holy Spirit in NJSIAA tennis


On Tuesday, fifth-seeded St. John Vianney continued Non Public South A competition by traveling to, and upsetting, No. 4 Holy Spirit in the NJSIAA tournament, 4-1.

Led by freshman Megan Giaimo’s straight set 6-0, 6-0 victory, the Lancers (8-7) swept singles play with wins by senior captain Michelle Collucci (6-3, 6-4) and Katie McAlick, whose hard fought match ended in the junior’s favor by scores of 2-6, 6-3, and 6-2.

St. John Vianney also earned a point for an impressive first doubles performance that saw Leigh Howe and Helena Coppola play to a 6-2, 6-2 finish.


MANASQUAN 5, NORTH PLAINFIELD 0: Abby Duddy (6-0, 6-0), Brianne Lauria (6-1, 6-0), and Gabrielle Longo (6-0, 6-0) earned singles victories for the third seeded Warriors (11-4) in Central Jersey Group II competition as Manasquan moved past the No. 6 Canucks (5-6) in this second round meeting. The Warriors also swept doubles play with victories by the pairings of Nicole Lauria and Shannon Harman (6-0, 6-0), as well as Margaret-Anne Smith and Hannah Di Bernardo (6-1, 6-2).


POINT BEACH 5, BURLINGTON CITY 0: Elizabeth Tell (6-0, 6-0), Katie Gaal (6-0, 6-0), and Julie Verni (6-0, 6-0) earned singles victories for the second-seeded Garnet Gulls (11-2) in Central Jersey Group I competition as Point Beach flew past the No. 7 Blue Devils in this second round meeting. The Garnet Gulls also swept doubles play with a victory by the pairings of Chloe Johnson and Kaitlin Stone (6-1, 6-1), as well as a second doubles win via forfeit.


SHORE 5, MATER DEI 0: Carly Rosati scored two goals and Carol Middough scored one goal and had one assist as the Bulldogs (10-1, 9-0) shutout the Seraphs (1-11, 1-7) to clinch their 42nd consecutive division title. Kara Casale and Jessica Welch also scored for the Bulldogs.

Kaityln Nash made 22 saves for the Seraphs on 45 shot attempts by the Bulldogs powerful offense.

MIDD. NORTH 3, HOWELL 2: Devon Freshnock scored two goals including the game-winning goal to lead the Lions (8-5-1, 7-1-1) past the Rebels (2-8-1, 2-7-1) in a Class A North game.

Howell’s goal keeper Jen Jamieson had eight saves.

FREEHOLD TWP. 3, MIDD. SOUTH 2: Breinne O’Donoghe scored the game winning goal with less than seven minutes left in the game as the Patriots (12-1, 9-0) came from behind to defeat the Eagles (4-7-2, 2-4-1) in a Class A North game.


JACKSON MEMORIAL 2, SOUTHERN 0: Garret Muzikowski scored the first goal of the game off an assist from Matt Fryc leading the Jaguars (14, 12-0) over the Rams (5-4-3, 4-4-3). With this win the Jaguars clinched the Shore Conference Class A South title for the first time since 2007.

Anthony Mandola added a goal in the 53rd minute and Devyn Josko recorded his 8th shut out of the year for the Jaguars.

SJ VIANNEY 4, RUMSON 2: Chris Loney scored the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute to give the Lancers (6-3-1) their first Class A Central win over the Bulldogs (5-3-1) in three years. Loney took a through ball from Marc Urbealis and put a low shot past the Bulldog keeper for the winner.

Vianney keeper Stephen Palladino made one of his 5 stops 3 minutes after the go-ahead goal to preserve the one goal lead for the Lancers.


PINELANDS 1, JACKSON LIB. 0: Pinelands’ Katrina MacNeil sent the sole goal of the game into upper left hand part of the cage from 25 yards out as the Wildcats (5-6-1) defeated the Lions (2-11-1) in this Class B South meeting. Danielle White recorded the assist for Pinelands while teammate Ariel Donza earned the shutout by stopping 10 shots.

RARITAN 1, MONMOUTH 0 (OT): Olivia Murgo found the back of the net in overtime for Raritan as the Rockets (2-7-1, 2-7-1) flew past the Falcons (4-9-1, 1-7-1) in this Class A Central matchup. Jess Benoit recorded the assist while senior goal tender Kylie Whalen stopped six shots to earn the shutout.

RUMSON-FH 1, SJ VIANNEY 0: Senior Casey Weis scored off a rebound from a shot by Lizzy Trocchia as the Bulldogs defeated the Lancers in a Class A Central game.


MARLBORO 2, RED BANK 0: Senior outside hitter Jet Manzi’s two aces. 12 kills and five digs propelled the Mustangs (9-2, 7-1) past the Bucs (12-5, 4-3) in Class A North.

Junior outside hitter Haley Unger added six kills and five digs.

MANCHESTER 2, LAKEWOOD 0: Led by senior setter-outside hitter Michelle Cuthbert’s two aces, four kills and 10 assists, the Hawks (10-3, 6-2) bested the Piners (2-9, 1-5) in Class B South.
