Voelker's goal lifts TR South over Manasquan


Justin Voelker scored his fifth goal of the season giving the Toms River South boys soccer team a 1-0 win over Manasquan in a Shore Conference Tournament first-round game on Thursday.

The 14th-seeded Indians (9-8) sent in a corner from Diego Mendez to the head of Voelker who put the ball in the back of the net from about six yards out in the 42nd minute. Colin White recorded his second shutout of the year for the Indians, recording six saves.

The 19th-seeded Warriors got a strong game from keeper Nolan Jordan who recorded 12 saves, and kept his team in the game until the final whistle. The Indians will advance and play at third-seeded Ocean on Saturday.


POINT BORO 1, JACKSON LIBERTY 0: Evan McHugh scored the only goal of the game leading the 11th-seeded Panthers (11-0-1) over the 22nd-seeded Lions (9-7). McHugh was assisted by Kenny Fellows in the 26th minute for the game winner.

MONSIGNOR DONOVAN 6, ST. ROSE 1: Matt Dillon scored the first goal of the game leading the 15th-seeded Griffins (13-3-1) over the 18th-seeded Purple Roses (10-5-1). John Underwood also scored a goal and dished out an assist for the Griffins.

RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN 2, SOUTHERN 0: Richie Purcell scored the first goal of the game leading the 20th-seeded Bulldogs (7-4-1) over the 13th-seeded Rams (8-6-3). Eamon Kitson had both assists for the Buulldogs including the final goal to Harry Gassert in the 51st minute.

TR NORTH 3, ASBURY PARK 2: Austin Higgins scored the winning goal in overtime leading the 12th-seeded Mariners over the 21st-seeded Bishops. Juliano Pilliari crossed the ball into the 18, and Higgins was able to head the ball into the goal from about 8 yards out.


MARLBORO 2, JACKSON MEMORIAL 0: Senior outside hitter Jet Manzi’s 17 kills and five aces led the Mustangs (14-3) past the Jaguars (13-5) in nondivisional play.

Junior outside hitter Haley Unger added three kills and nine digs. Freshman setter Grace Menningham contributed 12 assists and three aces.

For Jackson, senior outside hitter Courtney Matklock put up 10 kills, two acesm two blocks and two digs. Senior hitter-setter Kim Matlock added five kills, 5 assists, two blocks and three digs. Junior libero Kayla Martin-Culet contributed two kills and 10 digs.

MANCHESTER 2, BARNEGAT 0: Senior setter-outside hitter Michelle Cuthbert’s three aces, three digs, three kills and 11 assists helped the Hawks (13-5, 9-3) past the Bengals (12-9, 7-3) in Class B South.

Junior setter-middle hitter Kylie Siemanowicz added two aces, three blocks, six kills and six assists. Senior outside hitter Anevea Tinnery contributed two aces, three digs and seven kills.

Barnegat junior middle Sara Ridgeway put up five kills, two blocks and four digs. Junior outside hitter Meg Nichols contributed three aces and 10 digs. Junior middle hitter Hannah Fitzmaurice added five kills and two blocks.

CENTRAL 2, TOMS RIVER SOUTH 1: Led by junior setter Audra Didzbalis’ five kills, eight digs and 16 assists, the Golden Eagles (8-6) beat the Indians (9-8) in non-divisional action.

Senior outside hitter Rachel Iozzia added 12 kills and 13 digs. Junior outside hitter Danielle Myers notched two kills, two blocks, seven digs and eight assists for the Golden Eagles.
